Brian R. Wolf, M.D., M.S., is Professor and Vice-Chairman in the University of Iowa Department of Orthopedic Surgery. He is the John and Kim Callaghan Chair and Director of Sports Medicine at the University of Iowa.

Dr. Wolf practices orthopedic sports medicine and treats disorders of the shoulder, elbow, and knee. His areas of surgical interest include rotator cuff repair, shoulder instability surgery, anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and ligament injuries, cartilage restoration, elbow arthroscopy, and ligament repair, among others. Dr. Wolf is very active in providing care for athletes and is the head team physician for the University of Iowa football, women's basketball, baseball, and swimming teams.

 

Dr. Wolf's research interests center on clinical outcome studies and multi-center collaborative research. He is a longtime member of the NIH-funded Multi-Center Orthopedic Outcomes Network (MOON) research group, which has established prospective multi-center cohort studies to analyze predictors of outcomes following ACL reconstruction, shoulder instability surgery, and rotator cuff tears. Dr. Wolf has more than 150 peer-reviewed publications, in addition to over 20 book chapters. His research has been presented in over 100 scientific podiums and 50 poster presentations. Dr. Wolf has given more than 200 invited lectures nationally and internationally.

 

Dr. Wolf is a Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons (AAOS) and a member of the American Orthopedic Society for Sport Medicine (AOSSM) and the Arthroscopy Association of North America (AANA). He serves on numerous committees for AAOS and AOSSM, including as chair of the AAOS Fellowship Oversight committee. His honors include being a Fellow of the American Orthopedic Association (AOA), and being elected into the Herodicus Society, the American Shoulder and Elbow Society, and the Association of Bone and Joint Surgeons. He received the Lewis D. Holloway Award for Health Sciences Research at the University of Iowa. Dr. Wolf has twice been awarded the Neer Award for shoulder research, and he has been a part of research that earned the AOSSM O’Donohue Award and the AOSSM Herodicus Award twice each. He was a traveling fellow for the AOSSM exchange with Europe in 2010. He was selected for the esteemed AOA American British Canadian Traveling Fellowship in 2013. Dr. Wolf has been listed in U.S. News and World Report’s “Best Doctors in America” since 2007.
