Overview
The Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) Education Committee has collaborated with multidisciplinary experts to identify relevant educational topics and issues that affect the way nurses care for patients who are critically ill.  Best practice, research and evidence based literature will provide the foundation for all discussion. The format for this education series ranges from classroom lecture to simulation of patient care.

Objectives
  1. Describe the role of the preceptor and list key responsibilities of the role.
  2. Discuss the orientation process in the PICU and list the available resources used to document and track the orientation process.
  3. Discuss expectations of the preceptor and orientee including potential challenges that can occur for each during the orientation process.
  4. Discuss how to evaluate the orientee using the evaluation tool.
  5. Describe ways to give meaningful feedback to the orientee.
  6. Describe the importance of teaching unit-based culture and professionalism to the new staff.
  7. Describe burnout and the effect it can have on nurses and patient safety.
  8. Demonstrate through role-play how communication can impact learning for the orientee.

Registration
Pre-registration is not required.

Accreditation

1.0 contact hour will be granted by UIHC Department of Nursing (IBN Approved Provider #34).  Participants must attend the entire session to receive full credit.  No partial credits will be awarded.
