Pre-season Sports Medicine Emergency Sideline Management Course

The program is designed to present members of the health care team with current knowledge about diagnosis and management of a variety of injuries and emergencies commonly incurred during the fall sport of high school football. The first 2 hours of instruction are live virtual didactic sessions and the final 1.5 hour session will provide hands on skill instruction and practice involving CPR/AED, spinal motion restriction, athletic equipment removal, patient transport, and spine board techniques.

Format
The first 2 hours of instruction are live virtual didactic sessions. The final 1.5-hour session is for UI faculty and staff and will provide hands on skill instruction and practice involving spinal motion restriction, athletic equipment removal, patient transport, and spine board techniques.  The hands on training will be coordinated with Simulation in Motion - Iowa (SIM-IA) this year, which creates an exciting collaborative opportunity that should further enhance the hands on training for our faculty, residents, fellows, and athletic trainers providing sideline coverage. SIM-IA will lead scenarios to review BLS (CPR and use of AED) and breathing emergencies.

AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™ (3.50 hours), BOC CEU (3.50 hours), Non-Physician Attendance (3.50 hours)

1. Explain the jurisdiction of sideline health care professionals and Emergency Medical Services (EMS)
2. Define the components of an Emergency Action Plan (EAP).
3. Demonstrate safe and efficient removal of protective equipment including helmet and shoulder pads
4. Describe mandatory elements to discuss during the pre-game medical huddle
5. Describe concerning signs and symptoms that require formal evaluation at a medical facility
6. Recall same-day return to sport guidelines when assessing an athlete for concussion
7. Describe the spectrum of heat illness and acute management of heat stroke
8. Describe what on-field scenarios require spine boarding
9. Recognize signs and symptoms consistent with acute compartment syndrome
10. Demonstrate skills that allow for assessment of return to play following musculoskeletal injury
11. Describe the indications and limitations of diagnostic ultrasound for evaluation of acute musculoskeletal trauma
12. Describe the use of ultrasound for guiding return to play decisions
13. Understand indications for biologic interventions for acute musculoskeletal injury
14. Use an automated external defibrillator (AED)
15. Demonstrate correct spine boarding technique

There is no fee to attend, but registration is required to receive the link for the virtual program.  Please note:  Non UI affiliated physicians are welcome to register but are not eligible to receive CME credits.
