Overview
The University of Iowa’s ECMO program has been offering ECMO courses since 2009. We are proud to offer this ELSO Endorsed ECMO Training Course which is intended to train all levels of ECMO providers (APP, CCP, Physician, RN, RRT) through a combination of didactic presentations and high-fidelity simulation. This course will fullfil the requirements for Step 1 and Step 2 of the E-AEC certification. Course content includes management of VenoVenous and VenoArterial ECMO.

Target Audience

Objectives
  1. Identify the overview and history of Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygneation (ECMO).
  2. Describe ECMO components and monitoring tools.
  3. Identify the steps of cannulation for Venovenous (V-V) and Venoarterial (V-A) ECMO
  4. Contrast V-V and V-A ECMO configurations
  5. Identify ECMO complications
  6. Describe gas transfer in the membrane lung
  7. Compare hemodynamic monitoring during V-V and V-A ECMO
  8. Define and identify drainage insufficiency, return obstruction, and recirculation
  9. Define and identify ECMO emergencies
  10. Discuss respiratory failure and the role of ECMO
  11. Discuss cardiac failure and the role of ECMO
  12. Describe patient selection for V-V and V-A ECMO
  13. Describe initiation, maintenance, and weaning of V-V and V-A ECMO
  14. Explain left ventricular distention
  15. Describe differential oxygenation
  16. Discuss the role of sedation, physiotherapy, and anticoagulation during ECMO
  17. Review considerations for procedures on the ECMO patient
  18. Describe the role of renal replacement therapy during ECMO
  19. Discuss intrahospital and interhospital ECMO transport
  20. Review historical and recent evidence for V-V and V-A ECMO
