Objectives
  1. Describe overfed-undernourished phenomenon, root causes of metabolic abnormalities, and impact of lifestyle factors on diabetes and obesity
  2. Discuss the latest guidelines for personalized approach to type 2 diabetes
  3. Review pertinent literature for diabetes and cardiometabolic directed treatments
  4. Discuss the association between relational trauma and obesity and become competent in identifying health behavior patterns associated with trauma and obesity.
  5. Discuss strategies for health behavior change when a patient has a trauma history.
  6. Integrate diabetes treatment paradigms and diabetes technology
  7. Discuss the pathophysiology underlying weight regulation and use of different classes of anti-obesity medications
  8. Describe the risk factors, natural history, and complications of metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD)
  9. Review how to select appropriate medical therapy based on co-morbidities and clinical features
  10. Discuss the range of new anti-obesity medications which may become available in the future
  11. Define the current surgical procedures for obesity
  12. Discuss the expected weight loss outcomes for surgical procedures vs. medical management
  13. Define the possible complications from each surgical procedure
  14. Discuss the diagnostic criteria of MASLD and management options for MASLD
  15. Review ASCVD risk assessment
  16. Understand statin treatment and goals
  17. Discuss special considerations such as ASCVD and hypertriglyceridemia, ASCVD and familial hypercholesterolemia and Statin intolerance
  18. Understand the current recommendation for diagnosis and treatment of thyroid diseases

Carver College of Medicine has been authorized by the American Academy of Physician Associates (AAPA) to award AAPA Category 1 CME credit for activities planned in accordance with AAPA CME Criteria. This activity is designated for 7.5 AAPA Category 1 CME credits. PAs should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation.

Dietitian: Completion of RD/DTR profession-specific or IPCE activity awards CPEUs (1 IPCE credits = 1 CPEU). 

If the activity is dietetics related but not targeted to RDs or DTRs, CPEUs may be claimed which are commensurate with participation in contact hours (1 hour/60 minutes = 1 CPEU). 

RDs and DTRs are to select activity type 102 in their Activity Logs. Performance Indicator selection is at the learner's discretion.

Nurse and Other Health Care Provider:  A certificate of participation will be available after successful completion of the course. (It is the responsibility of licensees to determine if this continuing education activity meets the requirements of their professional licensure board.)  Iowa nurses may use participation in ACCME-accredited education toward their CE requirement for licensure.
