Overview
The program is designed to present health care professionals with current knowledge about diagnosis and management of a variety of injuries and emergencies commonly incurred during the fall sport of high school football. The first 2 hours of instruction are live virtual didactic sessions and the final 1.5 hour session will provide hands on skill instruction and practice involving CPR/AED, spinal motion restriction, athletic equipment removal, patient transport, and spine board techniques.

AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™ (3.50 hours), BOC CEU (3.50 hours), Non-Physician Attendance (3.50 hours)

Objectives
  1. Discuss the jurisdiction of sideline health care professionals and Emergency Medical Services (EMS).
  2. Define the components of an Emergency Action Plan (EAP).
  3. Describe mandatory elements to discuss during the pre-game medical huddle.
  4. Recognize concerning signs and symptoms that require formal evaluation at a medical facility.
  5. Explain same-day return to sport guidelines when assessing an athlete for concussion.
  6. Describe the spectrum of heat illness and acute management of heat stroke.
  7. Describe what on-field scenarios require spine boarding.
  8. Recognize signs and symptoms consistent with acute compartment syndrome.
  9. Demonstrate skills that allow for assessment of return to play following musculoskeletal injury.
  10. Explain the indications and limitations of diagnostic ultrasound for evaluation of acute musculoskeletal trauma.
  11. Describe the use of ultrasound for guiding return to play decisions.
  12. Discuss indications for biologic interventions for acute musculoskeletal injury.
  13. Use an automated external defibrillator (AED).
  14. Demonstrate safe and efficient removal of protective equipment including helmet and shoulder pads.
  15. Demonstrate correct spine boarding technique.
