There is a growing awareness of the impact of polypharmacy on the older adult. This series of six presentations is designed to provide healthcare professionals with training in the context of medication management, with the goal to advance the reach of geriatric expertise and ultimately improve care for patients and their families.

This series will be of particular interest to all health professionals who interact with older adult patients.

Presentations in the Medications and Deprescribing Series

Though completion of the entire series is not required to earn credit for individual presentations, it is strongly recommended, and the presentations are designed to be completed in order.

  1. Polypharmacy and Deprescribing
  2. Kidney Function and Medication Dosing Adjustments in the Older Adult
  3. High Risk Medications: Balancing the Risks and Benefits when Deprescribing
  4. Deprescribing and Alternative Treatments to Opioids and Anti-Anxiety Medications in Older Adults
  5. Reducing Risk of Negative Health Outcomes; Immunizations and Beers Criteria Update
  6. Deprescribing Antipsychotics in Older Adults

In Deprescribing Antipsychotics in Older Adults, Dr. Carnahan will discuss the rationale for decreasing antipsychotic doses or discontinuing antipsychotics in older adults. He will discuss the risks and benefits of antipsychotics in older adults. In addition, he will identify candidates for gradual dose reduction or discontinuation of antipsychotics. Finally, he will describe approaches to gradual dose reduction and discontinuation of antipsychotics.
