Thursday, August 27, 2020, 12:00 AM - Sunday, August 27, 2023, 12:00 AM, Online, Iowa City, IA

Overview

People with disabilities have the same general health care needs as others, but they are two times more likely to find health care providers’ skills and facilities inadequate. Providers rarely receive specific training for treating these populations, and consequently patients with disabilities receive poorer health treatments. Specifically, the importance of effective communication between physician and patient cannot be overstated. However, patients with disabilities often struggle with communication within the medical field, even when it comes to basic healthcare. Making healthcare services accessible to people with disabilities will reduce unacceptable Health Disparities.

In this series, patients with disabilities and their family members will discuss best practices that health care providers can utilize in their communication with patients with disabilities.

This course was supported through an award from the Iowa Department of Public Health using federal funding (Cooperative Agreement 1NU27DD000019) from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).  Its contents are solely the responsibility of the authors and do not necessarily represent the official views of CDC or the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
