Overview
Mechanical circulatory support (MCS) is complex and ever-changing intensive therapies within healthcare. Using a day long didactic structure, this program is designed to educate and train the healthcare professionals who care for mechanical circulatory support patients in the early post-operative phase. The session will focus on providing the tools and information necessary to develop strategies for safe and appropriate patient management.

Objectives
  1. Identify the appropriate patient population for mechanical circulatory support and resources available in caring for this population.
  2. Explain underlying principals necessary and care of patients on HeartMate II and HeartMate 3.
  3. Discuss underlying principals necessary and care of patients on HeartWare.
  4. Describe unit-based protocols, procedures, and resources in caring for mechanical circulatory support population in the inpatient settings of 4RC, CVICU, and PICU.
  5. Discuss underlying principals necessary and care of patients on Centrimag.
  6. Identify underlying principals necessary and care of patients on Impella.

There is no registration fee to attend this course or receive the optional nursing CE credits.

Accreditation

5.5 contact hours (with ICU) or 4.0 contact hours (without ICU) will be granted to 4RC staff by UI Hospitals and Clinics Department of Nursing (IBN Approved Provider #34). Participants must attend the entire program to receive full credit.
