Overview
The purpose of this program is to provide UIHC psychiatric-mental health nurses education and preparation for earning their professional nursing certification.  A comprehensive overview of the content related to psychiatric-mental health nursing practice will be given.  Application of this content will be accomplished through completing sample nursing certification test questions.  In addition, participants will be guided on the development of a post-course "personal action plan for success" in taking the professional nursing certification exam.  Achieving this credential validates an individual's knowledge, skills, and competence in the specialty area of psychiatric-mental health nursing.  This recognition of excellence promotes the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics (UIHC) Magnet culture.

Objectives
  1. Explain the purpose, process, and benefits of earning professional nursing certification.
  2. Describe the psychiatric-mental health nursing test content outline for the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) professional nursing certification.
  3. Review the major theoretical frameworks and foundational concepts that support psychiatric-mental health nursing.
  4. Differentiate between the basic and advanced psychiatric-mental health nursing practice roles.
  5. Discuss evidence-based psychiatric nursing practice issues, including the nursing process, scope of practice, and standards of care.
  6. Describe the neuroscience and clinical presentation of the primary psychiatric disorders.
  7. Review psychopharmacology and other psychiatric treatment modalities used in psychiatric-mental health care.
  8. Discuss leadership, management and research issues related to psychiatric-mental health nursing.
  9. Develop and apply test-taking strategies to psychiatric-mental health nursing exam questions.

Registration
Pre-registration:
All BHS staff must pre-register by contacting their NM or ANM.  
Registration Deadline:  One week prior to course date.

Accreditation

7.25 contact hours will be granted by UIHC Department of Nursing (IBN Approved Provider #34).  Participants must attend the entire program to receive full credit.  Credits are awarded following the session.
