Overview
The ACLS OB course is designed to help all course participants succeed in acquiring the skills and knowledge they need to perform their professional role in resuscitation attempts focusing on the OB patient.  This course is taught by American Heart Association qualified instructors and content experts in obstetrics.

Objectives
  1. Describe pathophysiology of pregnancy including what makes pregnant/newly delivered patients’ high risk for an event.
  2. Examine cardiac structure and function including EKG review.
  3. Discuss the modifications for each of the core cases covered in ACLS including CPR, respiratory, MI, and stroke.
  4. Discuss strategies for talking with families on ethical, practice, and legal issues.
  5. Demonstrate knowledge and skills in the management of the first 10 minutes of ventricular fibrillation/VT arrest, including primary and secondary ABCD survey of cardiac arrest and post-resuscitation care.
  6. Perform and demonstrate via case studies, the core knowledge and skills necessary to manage the following scenarios within a team: respiratory arrest, pulseless ventricular tachycardia and ventricular fibrillation with AED use and refractory VT/VF to AED, pulseless electrical activity, asystole, acute coronary syndrome, bradycardia, stable and unstable tachycardia, and acute ischemic stroke.
  7. Demonstrate via case study, the team leading and closed-loop communication skills necessary to manage ventricular fibrillation, pulseless electrical activity, and asystole cardiac arrest situations.
  8. Discuss current ACLS emergency medications including the does, route, and indications for epinephrine, atropine, dopamine, vasopressin, and sodium bicarbonate.

Accreditation

10.25 Contact hours will be awarded by UIHC Department of Nursing (IBN Approved Provider #34).  Participants must attend the entire program to receive full credit.
