Overview
This is a 1-day intermediate workshop focusing on the application of essential fetal heart monitoring and skills in intrapartum nursing practice. Day one and day two will focus on a combination of the following: an analysis of case scenarios requiring synthesis of key principles pertinent to the physiologic basis of fetal heart monitoring technology; tracing interpretation, nursing intervention; verbal and written communication skills; skill sessions that involve demonstration, practice, and testing of auscultation skills; performance of Leopold's Maneuvers; placement of an intrauterine pressure catheter and scalp electrode; communication; and documentation. Completion of written examinations and performance skills evaluations are requirements for successfully completing the program and earning continuing education credit (no partial credit will be awarded).

Objectives
  1. Assess EFM tracings utilizing NICHD terminology.
  2. Interpret EFM tracings, analyze uterine activity, and discuss contractions’ impact on fetal oxygenation.
  3. Describe clinical interventions and the related maternal-fetal physiology.
  4. Effectively communicate patient data through verbal and documentation methods.
  5. Describe roles and responsibilities of health care providers when using FHM in intrapartum care.

Registration

Course Fees

  • UIHC OB Nurses working on the in-patient units: No Fee (Course materials will be provided)
  • All Other UIHC OB/Family Medicine Staff: $0 registration fee, but must purchase AWHONN required course materials.
  • Participants outside UIHC: $110 registration fee, which does not include the cost of the AWHONN required course materials.

Payment of fees required at time of registration. 

Registration closes 9/28/2023.

Refund Policy: Full refund (minus $10 cancellation fee) if notification received on or before the registration deadline. 

Prerequisites:  Complete online content 48 hours before the start of class. If the online program is not completed, you will not be allowed to take the live session. Online content will be available 30 days before the start of class. Directions to access the online content will be available after registration is complete and the course workbook is received (see details under Course Fees and Course Materials in the brochure).


Accreditation

Those who attend and participate in the entire course will receive 11.25 contact hours of continuing nursing education credit or 11.25 continuing medical education credit. For successful completion of the course, Participants must successfully complete the online education, attend the instructor-led portion of the course, and successfully complete the skills stations and knowledge integration test (with a score of 80% or better). Participants must be advised that state and provincial nurse practice acts and institutional policies that prescribe specific independent and interdependent nursing activities and that govern practice must be considered when implementing the described assessments, interventions, and evaluations in individual practice settings. 
AWHONN is accredited with distinction as a provider of continuing education in nursing by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation. AWHONN is approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing, a Provider #CEP580.
