Overview

This is a 2-day intermediate workshop focusing on the application of essential fetal heart monitoring and skills in intrapartum nursing practice.  Day one and day two will focus on a combination of the following:  an analysis of case scenarios requiring synthesis of key principles pertinent to the physiologic basis of fetal heart monitoring technology; tracing interpretation, nursing intervention; verbal and written communication skills; skill sessions that involve demonstration, practice, and testing of auscultation skills; performance of Leopold's Maneuvers; placement of an intrauterine pressure catheter and scalp electrode; communication; and documentation.  Completion of written examinations and performance skills evaluations are requirements for successfully completing the program and earning continuing education credit (no partial credit will be awarded).

Objectives
  1. Assess EFM tracings utilizing NICHD terminology.
  2. Interpret EFM tracings, analyze uterine activity, and discuss contractions’ impact on fetal oxygenation.
  3. Describe clinical interventions and the related maternal-fetal physiology.
  4. Effectively communicate patient data through verbal and documentation methods.
  5. Describe roles and responsibilities of health care providers when using FHM in intrapartum care.

Registration
Prerequisites:  Fetal Heart Monitoring Principles and Practices is not a basic monitoring course.  The workshop builds on the knowledge and skills of experienced nurses and providers.  It is designed for clinicians who have completed a basic or foundation fetal heart monitoring course or who utilize fetal heart monitoring in the intrapartum setting.
Course Fees:  There is no fee for UIHC OB nurses working on the in-patient units.   Registration fee for all others is $244 which includes the cost of the AWHONN required course workbook.  Payment of fees required at the time of registration.

Accreditation

AWHONN is accredited as a provider of continuing nursing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation. AWHONN also holds a California BRN number California CNE provider # CEP580. Those who attend and participate in the entire course will receive 18.0 contact hours of continuing nursing education credit. Professional Education Services Group provides 15.25 CME. Participation in the entire course is necessary.
