Overview
To provide initial training to Emergency Department (ED) staff on proper chemical, biological, radiological decontamination procedures via didactic sessions as well as hands-on performance of donning and doffing the personal protective equipment in use at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics (UIHC).

Objectives
  1. Describe a medical center’s involvement in a hazardous materials event.
  2. Describe key elements in the reception of patients arriving after contamination or exposure to hazardous materials.
  3. Describe the differentiation between contaminated exposed individuals.
  4. Identify common chemical, biological, radiological materials that could be used in a terrorist/hazardous chemicals exposure incident.
  5. List resources available to hospital providers to assist in the care of the contaminated patient.
  6. Identify toxicology terms as they relate to treating contaminated patients.
  7. Identify factors involved in assuring personnel safety, safety of existing patients and visitors and prevention of secondary contamination during a hazardous materials incident in the ED.
  8. Demonstrate the initial assessment of the contaminated patient upon their arrival to the ED.
  9. Describe the entry routes and target organ systems as they relate to contaminated patients.
  10. Identify UIHC Policies and Procedures related to a hazardous materials emergency.
  11. Describe the ED response to decontamination needs, patient flow patterns, ensuring adequate personnel, and delineation of roles and responsibilities during an episode involving hazardous materials.
  12. Identify equipment required for decontamination with a focus on staff PPE.
  13. Describe essential steps in the post-decontamination incident recovery process.

Registration
There are no fees for registration or nursing CEU credits.

Accreditation

7.0 contact hours will be granted by UIHC Department of Nursing (IBN Approved Provider #34). Participants must attend the entire program to receive full credit.
