Overview

Purpose and Description: The PALS course is designed to help all course participants succeed in acquiring the lifesaving skills and knowledge they need to perform their professional role  in resuscitation attempts. This course is taught by American Heart Association qualified instructors and content experts in cardiovascular care.

Objectives
  1. Perform the systematic approach to pediatric assessment of a seriously ill or injured child, including the general, primary, secondary and tertiary assessment.
  2. Summarize the “initial impression-primary assessment-secondary assessment-evaluation” approach to management of a seriously ill infant or child.
  3. Recognize and manage a child in respiratory distress or failure and/ or compensated or hypotensive shock.
  4. Recognize and manage a child with a life-threatening bradyarrhythmia, tachyarrhythmia, or cardiac arrest rhythms.
  5. Describe key elements of resuscitation team behaviors and explain why the foundation of successful resuscitation includes both mastery of basic skills and effective team dynamics.
  6. Apply team dynamics: Describe roles and responsibilities of effective teams. Demonstrate effective team dynamics in pediatric case scenarios.
  7. Discuss common fluids and emergency care drugs used in the prevention and treatment of cardiopulmonary failure and arrest in children.
  8. Team-lead in one cardiac and either a shock or respiratory scenario.

Registration
Pre-registration is required at least four weeks prior to the class. We reserve the right to cancel classes due to insufficient enrollment.
Nurse Managers or staff may register individuals for the initial and Renewal PALS through CVent via the EMSLRC site: https://uihc.org/emslrc- program-and-course-policies

Accreditation

Contact hours will be awarded by UIHC Department of Nursing (IBN Approved Provider #34). Participants must attend the entire program to receive full credit.
Initial class: 8 contact hours
