Overview

The practice of surgery is always evolving. This conference aims to review important principles of
general surgery as well as provide updates on new changes in general surgery practice. 

Location and Parking: 
The conference will be held in the Ziffren Auditorium (1501-Z JCP) at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.  The Ziffren Auditorium is located inside the Surgery Administrative offices near Elevator H, and directly across the hall from Hospital Administration on the first floor.  In-person attendance only.  

If you are not a University employee you will need to give your name to Safety and Security to enter the hospital.  All pre-registered guests will be on the list.  Register no later than 12:00 pm, on Thursday, October 12.  

Parking is available in Ramp 2 for non university employees.

Objectives
  1. Discuss steps to manage a difficult patient interaction
  2. Discuss steps to take when a lawsuit is filed against them
  3. Describe how Tort reform applies to them
  4. Describe new strategies for salvaging difficult situations in the OR
  5. Examine the data behind some of the common surgical practices that vary widely between attendings

Registration all providers $100 (Includes one dinner ticket on Thursday evening at 6:00 pm at the Vue Rooftop.  More information to follow.)

Residents and Students* no charge

*Student is defined as an individual going to school full-time or part-time, not holding a current license to practice, and not needing CE credit.

Accreditation

In support of improving patient care, the University of Iowa Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine is jointly accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), to provide continuing education for the healthcare team.

 

Physician:  The University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine designates this live activity for a maximum of 4.5 AMA PRA Category 1 CreditsTM. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity. 

  Successful completion of this CME activity which includes participation in the evaluation component enables the learner to earn credit toward the CME and Self-Assessment requirements of the American Board of Surgery’s Continuous Certification program.
