General Oncology

The purpose of this class is to provide general oncology related subjects to newer nurses.


Iowa Board of Nursing, Provider #34 (6.40 hours), Non-Nurse Attendance (6.40 hours)

1. Explain how cancer develops and the various ways in which it is treated.
2. Identify important tests, procedures and blood counts to be aware of when working with oncology patients.
3. Identify and list interventions to support/manage nutritional problems in people with cancer.
4. Outline the role that pharmacy plays in the care of people living with cancer and how nurses can partner with pharmacy in providing quality care.
5. Discuss the essential role of therapeutic communication in the care of patients and self and actively applying these principles in every day facets of life.
6. Outline important strategies and interventions for managing cancer related pain.
7. Review the role of the social workers and the navigator/care coordinators in the discharge process, including psychosocial/financial considerations and follow up care.
8. Review the role of the navigator/care coordinator in the discharge process.

Workshop Fee: 
UIHC Staff working on oncology units: No fee 
UIHC All Other Staff: $25
Non-UIHC Staff: $96 (includes workshop materials, food voucher, and parking) A $20 non-refundable late fee will be assessed for all registrations made after the April 17, 2024 deadline.

Refund: Full (minus $20 cancellation fee) if notification received 3 days prior to the program. Substitutions are permitted at any time.

6.4 contact hours will be granted by UI Hospitals & Clinics Department of Nursing (IBN Approved Provider #34). Participants must attend the entire program to receive full credit.
