Overview

The purpose of this continuing education course is to provide general oncology related subjects to newer nurses.


Credits
Non-Nurse Attendance (6.50 hours), University of Iowa Health Care Dept. of Nursing Services and Patient Care (6.50 hours)

Objectives
  1. Explain how cancer develops and the various ways in which it is treated.
  2. Identify important tests, procedures, and blood counts to be aware of when working with oncology patients.
  3. Identify and list interventions to support/manage nutritional problems in people with cancer.
  4. Recognize common indications for genetic counseling and genetic testing in oncology and explain the impact of hereditary cancer syndromes on patient and family medical management.
  5. Discuss the essential role of therapeutic communication in the care of patients and self and actively applying these principles in everyday facets of life.
  6. Outline important strategies and interventions for managing cancer related pain.
  7. Discuss the impact of libraries on patient health outcomes.
  8. Describe exercise guidelines for cancer survivors.
  9. Review the role of the navigator/care coordinator in the discharge process.

Registration

Registration Fees:

  • UI Health Care Attendee
    Staff nurses working on oncology units = $0
    All other UI Health Care staff = $25

  • Non-UI Health Care Attendees = $96
    Fee includes workshop materials, food voucher, and parking. A $20 non-refundable late fee will be assessed for all registrations made after October 13, 2027 deadline.

Refund: Full refund (minus 20 cancellation fee) if notification received on or before October 13, 2027. Substitutions are permitted at any time.

Accreditation

6.5 contact hours will be offered by University of Iowa Health Care Department of Nursing Services and Patient Care Continuing Education Office and align with the appropriate subject matter found in Iowa Administrative Code 655 chapter 5.2(3).
