Overview

This conference has been cancelled and will be rescheduled to Fall 2020 - date to be determined.

The purpose of the Iowa Pediatric Mental Health Collaborative’s Critical Conversations trainings is to develop and strengthen Iowa’s primary care workforce capacity to address the mental health needs of children and youth within their medical home. This will be achieved by providing mental health focused trainings to advance Primary Care Providers' (PCPs) knowledge, skills and competence in identifying, assessing and treating mild to moderate presentations of the more common child and adolescent psychiatric disorders such as ADHD, Anxiety and Depression.

Session topics will include:
-Medication Management
-Anxiety
-Depression
-Dialectical Behavior Therapy
-Eating Disorders

Attendees will also learn about the new Iowa Pediatric Mental Health Collaborative.

Credits
AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™ (4.50 hours), Non-Physician Attendance (4.50 hours)

Objectives
  1. Discuss common behavioral issues that are brought up in medication management appointments.
  2. Review behavioral techniques, with an emphasis on techniques that can apply to the most common problems and diagnoses seen and discussed in medication management appointments.
  3. Identify how these strategies can be relayed to caregivers so that they may be implemented at home.
  4. Recognize signs and symptoms of anxiety and depressive disorders.
  5. Assess for anxiety and/or depressive disorders in children with behavioral problems.
  6. Recommend treatment plan that includes medication options for anxiety and depressive disorders.
  7. Review the goals and objectives of the Iowa Pediatric Mental Health Collaborative.
  8. Discuss trainings to develop capacity of primary care providers to treat children with mild to moderate needs within their medical home.
  9. Describe consultation service between primary care providers and University of Iowa Child and Adolescent Psychiatrists.
  10. Recommend connection with Regional Pediatric Mental Health Teams for care coordination and family to family support.
  11. Describe the origins and foundations of DBT.
  12. Discuss the 4 skills modules in DBT programming.
  13. Introduce DBT group structure at UIHC.
  14. Review signs and symptoms of common eating disorders.
  15. Discuss the prevalence of eating disorders in the pediatric population.
  16. Identify diagnostic evaluation methods for children, adolescents and their families.
  17. Recommend evidence-based treatments for patients affected by eating disorders.
