Overview
This program is designed for primary care physicians,including specialists in family practice, internal medicine, and pediatrics; clinical microbiologists; pharmacists; nurses; and individuals in training for these careers.

Lectures and interactive workshops will provide an update on the current, state-of-the-art diagnosis and treatment of infectious diseases that commonly arise in adults and/or children in the community and would routinely be encountered by primary care physicians in the Midwest.

Objectives
  1. Discuss the progress that has been made in treatment of persons living with HIV and the remaining challenges in ending the HIV pandemic
  2. Describe ways to influence health policy to improve outcomes for persons with infections
  3. Identify epidemiologic and clinical clues to several infections of public health importance in the Midwest
  4. Identify individuals for whom preexposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is an effective approach to prevention of HIV infection
  5. Evaluate persons with antibiotic allergies to allow for optimal antibiotic therapy
  6. Explain treatments of common skin and soft tissue infections in an outpatient setting and when to refer patients for further evaluation or hospital admission
  7. Discuss the latest advances in medical care of persons living with HIV
  8. Explain effective treatment and prevention approaches for persons at risk for infection from various animal exposures
  9. Apply new recommendations for diagnosis and treatment of persons with Clostridioides difficile infection
  10. Identify and treat persons at risk for fungal infections endemic to the Midwest, including histoplasmosis
  11. Evaluate the person with diabetes presenting with signs and symptoms indicating a foot infection
  12. Assess complex infectious disease problems using a case-based format

Accreditation

The University of Iowa Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

Application for CME credit has been filed with the American Academy of Family Physicians. Determination of credit is pending. 

Contact hours will be granted by University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics Department of Nursing (IBN Approved Provider #34). 

CEI is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education as a provider of continuing pharmacy education.
