Overview
The purpose of this class is to provide an update on oncology related subjects for experienced nurses. Topics will include assessment and management of sepsis, ostomy care 101, blood culture stewardship when caring for oncology patients, the importance of self-care for oncology nurses, updates on “chemo brain” research, discussion on heated intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC), and updates on treatment options for head and neck cancer patients.

Objectives
  1. Review strategies for assessing and managing sepsis in oncology patients.
  2. Discuss standard ostomy cares, assessments, trouble shooting and patient education needs.
  3. Explain the importance of blood culture stewardship when caring for oncology patients.
  4. Discuss the importance of self-care and review self-care strategies for oncology nurses.
  5. Review the latest research on “chemo brain”.
  6. Discuss HIPEC as a treatment option for select oncology patients.
  7. Review care of head and neck cancer patients including treatment options, post-operative care, and nursing assessment/management.

Pre-registration  required - Register through your Nurse Manager 
Registration Deadline: One week prior to session 

Accreditation

5.3 contact hours will be granted by UIHC Department of Nursing (IBN Approved Provider #34). Participants must attend the entire program to receive full credit.
