Overview

This on-demand course provides an overview for Iowa clinicians of the CDC Clinical Practice Guideline for Prescribing Opioids for Pain — United States, 2022. It is jointly provided by Iowa Medical Society.

  • Iowa Licensure Requirement: The course fulfills Iowa's requirement for clinicians who prescribe opioids (Nurse Practitioners, Physician Assistants/Associates, Physicians) to complete 2 hours of continuing education regarding the CDC Clinical Practice Guideline for Prescribing Opioids for Pain.
  • Substance Use Disorder Training: The course qualifies as 1 hour of accredited training toward the MATE Act Substance Use Disorder training requirement.

Course Description
This 4-part course is a combination of videos, text, on-screen activities, ungraded knowledge checks, and graded quizzes at the end of each of the 4 parts. It will take approximately 2 hours to complete.


How to complete this course for credit:

  1. Register.
  2. a) Go to 'Course Content & Tests' tab above. b) Launch 'Part 1'; this will open in a separate window. c) Complete all of the content. d) Return to 'Course Content & Tests' and complete the Quiz.
  3. Repeat step 2 for Parts 2, 3, and 4.
  4. At the end of the course, follow instructions to complete the evaluation.
  5. After you submit your evaluation, you'll find your certificate under 'MyCE', Evaluations and Certificates.

Learners are expected to engage with all of the content and pass the graded quizzes to be eligible to earn CE credit.

Registration for the course closes March 1, 2027, at 4 pm Central Time. Registrants must complete the course before it expires on March 19, 2027, at 4 pm Central Time; extensions will not be permitted.
